Materials
Lightweight composite materials are extremely strong and can be intricately formed. With fewer and better-performing composite parts, CFM’s next engine will be lighter and more efficient.
Composite parts are also more resistant to heat. This means longer part life and lower maintenance costs – good for operators.
CFM is using Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) for the LEAP-X turbine. These blades will be more durable and efficient than traditional metallic ones.
A new 3-D woven resin transfer molding (RTM) fan will further reduce engine weight. Since RTM technology enables more complex and efficient shapes, the LEAP-X fan will have 18 blades compared to 24-36 blades today.
Complete with a composite case, the fan will save 1,000 pounds per aircraft compared to the same size fan using metallic components.
