CFM Combustion Technology: Lowering NOx Emissions
One of the LEAP-X program’s most exciting solutions is an ultramodern Twin Annular Pre-Swirl (TAPS) combustor that will reduce NOx (nitrous oxide) emissions by 50 - 60 percent compared to current CAEP/6 limits.
NOx emissions are generated when fuel and air react in the combustor at high temperatures. The longer the hot fuel and air mixture stays there, the more NOx is emitted.
In the TAPS combustor, two pre-swirlers mix fuel and air before they enter the combustor’s main chamber. This pre-swirling creates a leaner mixture and minimizes its residence time to dramatically reduce NOx.
In addition to operating cleaner than ever before, the TAPS combustor in the core of the LEAP-X engine will be more durable than previous combustors and have a longer life.
